Welding bay matting calculator

Enter the area you need to protect and the tile or mat size you're considering. You'll get an estimated number of units, including a waste allowance for cuts and offcuts. It's a planning figure to size up a job — not a quote.

1 / Area to cover

Irregular shape? Split it into rectangles, work each out, and add them up.

2 / Tile or mat size
3 / Waste allowance & price (optional)

Price is whatever your supplier quotes — enter it to see an indicative total. We don't store anything; this runs in your browser.

How the estimate works

The calculator multiplies length by width for the floor area, adds your waste percentage, then divides by the area of one tile or mat and rounds up to whole units. In short:

  • Floor area = length × width
  • Coverage = floor area × (1 + waste %)
  • Units = coverage ÷ area per unit, rounded up

A waste allowance of around 10% is a common starting point for a tidy rectangular bay; allow more where there are lots of cuts, awkward corners or fixed equipment to work around. For interlocking tiles, remember edge and corner pieces may reduce usable coverage slightly.

This tool sizes the quantity. It doesn't tell you which grade of matting to use — that depends on your process, heat and where sparks land. Seehow to specify welding bay mattingand welding bay flooring, or send us the details.
