Buying fire-resistant matting is not a matter of choosing the strongest marketing claim. The useful comparison is whether a supplier can document the exact mat, tile or roll being quoted and explain where it belongs in your hot work controls.
What should US and Canadian buyers compare?

Are fire test systems interchangeable?
No. A European EN 13501-1 flooring class, an ASTM result and a CAN/ULC result answer different questions under different methods. One should not be presented as an automatic substitute for another. Imported products can still be useful, but the buyer should confirm that the evidence is accepted for the project and covers the exact supplied construction.
What claims should make you pause?
- “Fireproof” without a defined test method or exposure limit.
- A certificate for a family of products when the quoted thickness or backing is unclear.
- A general rubber or nitrile claim applied to every mat made from that material.
- Anti-fatigue or anti-slip performance presented as proof of fire resistance.
- A temperature headline borrowed from a welding blanket or fabric and applied to a floor mat.
Which supplier type is best?
There is no universal best supplier. A specialist may help translate a welding or grinding process into a specification. A manufacturer may offer the clearest technical documentation. A broad industrial distributor may provide faster stock and established purchasing terms. Compare the exact product and service needed, not the size or familiarity of the company.
